Navy Football, Fans Ship Out to Ireland

The team and more than 900 midshipmen are getting ready to head to Ireland for Navy football's season opener against Notre Dame.

When the U.S. Naval Academy football team takes the field for its season opener against Notre Dame in Dublin, Ireland on Saturday, thousands of American fans—including more than 900 midshipmen—will be cheering in the stands. "We don’t get a chance like this every day," Midshipman Second Class Soon Kwon said. "Usually games are at home or a nearby state, and this is a great way for us to get away from school, have fun and celebrate our football team." He spent about $1,200 on airfare and lodging in order to watch Navy take the field at Aviva Stadium with his friendsfor the Emerald Isle Classic website. They leave Thursday night after classes. Navy Hosts Lunches With Coach Ken

Four times this football season Navy fans will have the opportunity to have lunch with Head Coach Ken Niumatalolo and talk about the season.

Navy football fans have the opportunity to join Head Coach Ken Niumatalolo for lunch and talk about the season on four different Tuesdays this fall. "It gives people an inside look at Navy football," said Associate Athletic Director Scott Strasemeier. "It's a good lunch, but it's also an opportunity to meet the coach and ask him a question or two." The 2012 Navy Football Luncheon Series will kick off at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in the N-Room at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. During the lunch Niumatalolo and host Pete Medhurst will "break down the upcoming season, including the opener on Sept. 1 against Notre Dame," according to a press release. The team flies out to Ireland the next day to face the fighting Irish on Saturday at Aviva …
