Obama Presents Commander-in-Chief Trophy to Naval Academy—Again

Naval Academy midshipmen have won the trophy eight times in 10 years.

For the eighth time in 10 years, President Barack Obama has honored the U.S. Naval Academy with the Commander-in-Chief Trophy for defeating the other service academies in football. The trophy is awarded to the winner of the Navy, Army and Air Force series of football games. In 2012, Navy won 17-13 over the Army in December after beating the Air Force 28-21 in October. Obama told the midshipmen Friday that soon he'd be visiting them for commencement in Annapolis. Commissioning Week for the Class of 2013 is May 17-24. Following that, many of them will be sent across the world, and the scope of their teamwork would be greatly enhanced. The contest invited fans of both teams to submit their own spirit videos last month. The academy and West Point each chose their top three videos, and fans voted for the winners through Facebook. Nicholas Vandiver is a first-year student at the academy. Army, Navy Host Spirit Video Contest

Fans have until Nov. 28 to submit spirit videos that will be played on the videoboard during the football game.

Fans of Navy football have a chance to show their spirit by making their own video to be featured during the Army-Navy game on Dec. 8. "With midshipmen and cadets producing spirit videos for the game each year, this now gives fans on both sides a chance to do the same," said Jeff Barnes, a Navy Athletics spokesman. Every year students at the U.S. Naval Acdemy and West Point create spirit videos ahead of the game, which usually are a music video remake of a popular song. In 2012, both Army and Navy chose the South Korean Pop song "Gangnam Style," and both garnered more YouTube clicks than any previous video. The midshipmen's video was viewed more than 6.5 million times. The two teams collaborated this year to expand the game's social media …

The man in the photo is considered a suspect in the theft of $600 replica of the Naval Academy mascot.

Annapolis Police are searching for a man in connection with the theft of a stuffed replica of the Naval Academy mascot that was stolen from a Jeep during a football game against Indiana on Oct. 20.  The screen shot comes from a video obtained by police who say the man is considered a suspect in the stuffed goat's disappearance. Naval Academy Locks Horns With Irish Football Club

The Irish American Football Association claims the academy promised it about $92,000 to help with grassroots American football efforts.

The Sept. 1 football game between the Naval Academy and Notre Dame has caught some opposition from a local Irish group that claims Navy football broke its promises, according to the Marine Corps Times. The Irish American Football Association (IAFA) has some authority to regulate how American football is played in Ireland, and Navy officials initially entered into talks in 2010 and 2011 when the Emerald Isle Classic idea was first brought up. Navy Athletic Director Chet Gladchuk told the Marine Corps Times he believed these talks were necessary to secure approval for the game, but the academy soon realized they were not and ended the conversation. IAFA officials claim that during those discussions Navy officials promised to help with …
