Custom Marine Canvas Shop Opens in Eastport

After more than four years at sea, Alan Woodyard drops anchor in Annapolis.

Growing up, Alan Woodyard never though sewing would become his passion. The 30-year-old Hartford County native majored in mass communications but worked odd jobs after graduation. "I couldn't really find something that I wanted to do and I realized that was because I wanted to be out on the water," Woodyard said. He packed up his belongings and moved to Florida for a three-month course in boat repair at the Chapman School of Seamanship. He spent the next four years living and working aboard yachts that took him from Los Angeles to Tahiti. During his travels, Woodyard started using a portable sewing machine to repair rips his boat's canvas. Word spread about the quality of his work, and Woodyard soon found himself working on repairs for …

Antique Store Moves to West Annapolis

Retropolitan Fine Antiques and Vintage relocated to Annapolis from historic Ellicott City.

Visitors to the West Annapolis shopping district will find a new addition to the neighborhood: A vintage clothing and antique store called Retropolitan. The store opened its doors in mid-December after relocating from Ellicott City. "I had been in Ellicott City for 17 years, and I just decided it was time for a change," co-owner Cindi Ryland said. "I thought Annapolis would be great." The retired French and Spanish teacher found her new space at 14 Annapolis St. on Craigslist one night. "I was playing around on Craigslist, because I was starting to lose hope of finding a place and my new space popped up," Ryland said. "My future landlord knew my shop—it was kind of karma." Ryland opened the store with her daughter Caitlin Ryland as a joint…

Furniture Decor Store Moving to West Street

Maine Cottage will be moving from its Severna Park home to a bigger Annapolis location in early November.

Maine Cottage, a coastal living furniture store, is uprooting and moving to 209 West St. in Annapolis this November. The Severna Park business is leaving its 500 square foot store for a new, three-story location in Annapolis with a showroom that's four times larger. “We searched in Severna Park because we have loved the community for so long, and they have been so good to us,” said Showroom Manager Susan Singleton. “However, we couldn’t find something big enough to accommodate corporate offices and the showroom altogether. We are growing very rapidly.“ The Severna Park showroom opened in 2003 under the name Russell & Mackenna. The store specializes bright colors, airy fabrics and a relaxed decor for people looking to furnish beach houses …

Tasti D-Lite to Open on West Street This September

A new place for frozen treats plans to open at 40 West St. by the third week of September.

Tasti D-Lite officials is ready to start renovations on its new West Street store once the city gives its final OK for interior construction to begin. "We just signed the lease about a week ago and got our floor plan from corporate," said Manager Mary Templin. "We're ready to probably start painting the outside this week." The "battleship gray" building will be painted a "bright, cheery ice cream blue" in order to make the store more recognizable, Templin said. "We want people to say the ice cream store on West Street, you know, the blue one," she said. Before Tasti D-Lite moved in the location was a hair salon, and it sits next to Dunkin Donuts and across the street from Rams Head Tavern, which has offices on the floor above the new shop…
