O’Malley: 75,000 Power Outages, Sandy Picking Up Speed

Marylanders without power number 75,000 as Sandy picks up speed and intensity.

Hurricane Sandy is expected to make landfall between 8 and 10 p.m. Monday, Gov. Martin O’Malley said in a 5 p.m. press conference. The number of Maryland residents without power reached 75,000 just after 5 p.m., O’Malley said at Maryland Emergency Management Agency headquarters in Reisterstown. “The storm is becoming stronger in her center with 90 mile an hour winds,” O’Malley said. “The good news is she’s moving faster.” If the storms continue to move fast, it may be in Maryland for a shorter time than the originally predicted 24 to 36 hours, O’Malley said. In addition to power outages, the number of which will increase, the state is monitoring flooding. Five to six inches of rain have already fallen, and another six inches is expected to…

O’Malley: Power Outages Rise Drastically to More Than 24,000

Additionally, bridges will close and early voting tomorrow is canceled, Gov. Martin O’Malley said Monday afternoon.

As Hurricane Sandy arrives in Maryland, more than 24,000 state residents are without power, Gov. Martin O’Malley announced in a press briefing Monday afternoon. “This is a very, very dangerous storm and she is intensifying at her center,” he said. O'Malley reiterated that trees, poles and power lines will be knocked down. “The main message of the day is to hunker down and to stay inside,” he said. In the half-hour prior the briefing, which began just after 2 p.m., the number of Marylanders without power rose from around 1,000 to more than 24,000, O'Malley said at Maryland Emergency Management Agency headquarters in Reisterstown. One person died in a weather-related car crash in Montgomery County around 11:30 a.m. Monday, The Washington …

O’Malley: People Will Die

Gov. Martin O’Malley urged Marylanders to stay inside for the next 36 hours and said the storm will take lives as it moves through Maryland.

Gov. Martin O’Malley said Marylanders will die as Hurricane Sandy moves through the state. “The days ahead are going to be very difficult,” he said in a press conference at Maryland Emergency Management Agency headquarters in Reisterstown Monday morning. “There will be people who will die and are killed in the storm.” He urged residents to stay off the roads and stay inside for the next 24 to 36 hours. High winds are anticipated for the Baltimore-Washington area by the early afternoon, O’Malley said. He expects power outages to start this afternoon and this evening. “There will be many trees that will go down and there will be many power lines that will go down,” he said. The storm has intensified in the past 12 hours, the governor said. “…

BGE Walks, Talks With Residents About Outage Problems

Arundel on the Bay residents met with BGE representatives to try and find solutions to what they see as frequent power outage problems.

Representatives from Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) spent a few hours on Tuesday morning working to repair its relationship with residents from Arundel on the Bay. "There is a part of me that's really incredulous," resident Tim Hamilton said. "I've never lived in a place where people buy generators like they live in a third world country." Arundel on the Bay customers have experienced sustained outages—meaning longer than five minutes—29 times since 2006 while neighboring communities like Hillsmere Shores have lost power just 5 times, according to statistics compiled by BGE. During June's derecho storm many community members commiserated about being out of power for up to six days. These extended outages pose additional complications for…

PSC Approves $18M of Pepco's $68M Rate Increase Request

The increase will raise a household's monthly electricity bill by about $2, according to a statement issued by the Maryland Public Service Commission.

Of the $68 million rate increase requested by Pepco, the Maryland Public Service Commission has rejected $50 million. Still, the $18 million rate increase "translates into a $2.02 typical residential monthly bill impact" (a 1.69 percent increase), according to a statement issued by the Maryland Public Service Commission on Friday afternoon. In the rejection order, the commission "noted its overall dissatisfaction with Pepco’s performance, and characterized its request to increase returns to shareholders 'before Pepco corrects its sub-par performance' as 'backwards,' " according to the statement. Pepco filed the request on Dec. 16, 2011. "The full record in the case included testimony from 31 witnesses and 11 days of evidentiary hearings, …

State Death Count Rises to 6

The state’s death count has risen to six as more than 400,000 Marylanders are still without power.

Six Marylanders have died as a result of Friday night’s storm, Gov. Martin O’Malley said during a news conference Monday. More than 400,000 Marylanders were still without power as of 3:30 p.m. Monday as the state approached approximately 60 percent restoration, O’Malley said. Three of the six deaths from the storm were heat-related, and two of those three were senior citizens. Those deaths were in Baltimore City, Wicomico and Montgomery counties, according to Fran Phillips, deputy secretary of public health service for the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. In the case of the other three deaths, an Anne Arundel County resident died after a tree fell on his SUV, a Montgomery County resident died after a tree fell on their …

O'Malley: State Assessing Severe Storm Damage

Primary concerns are high heat coupled with more severe weather expected late this afternoon and evening and restoring power to 800,000 people.

UPDATED (2:19 p.m.)—Gov. Martin O'Malley said state officials are assessing damage across Maryland in the wake of a severe line of thunderstorms that has knocked out power to more than 820,000 customers statewide. In a conference call with reporters, the governor and other state officials said they are assessing the need for cooling centers as the state faces expected severe hot weather over the next several days. Power restoration is also a priority as emergency management officials say they are tracking a line of severe storms that are expected to hit the state as early as late Saturday afternoon. "The utilities are taking the lead on this and the counties are supporting them," O'Malley said. "We're helping [the counties]." Across …

UPDATE: Storm Leaves Power Outages, Fallen Trees in County

It could take days to restore power to more than 93,000 residents after a severe storm swept through Anne Arundel County on Friday night.

UPDATE (9:25 p.m.)—A wind and rain storm that many weren't expecting hit Anne Arundel County about 10 p.m. Friday and roared through the area leaving toppled trees, scattered debris and power outages. On Saturday just before 6 p.m., Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) showed more than 93,000 outages in the county—with power restored to nearly 18,000 customers since Friday—on the BGE online outage map. At 9:25 p.m., the map showed that 28,758 had power restored. BGE warned that it could take days to fully restore power. More than 500 out-of-state utility workers will assist but BGE said the majority of those resources will not be available until Monday and Tuesday. The Washington Post reported there is a possibility for more severe storms in …

Power Back On in Downtown Annapolis

New equipment being installed at a substation caused an outage for approximately 5,000 Annapolis residents, said a BGE spokesperson.

About 5,000 Annapolis-area residents lost power Thursday between approximately 11:30 a.m. and 12:40 p.m. after Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) installed some new equipment. "We were putting in some new equipment at one of our substations," said BGE spokesperson Rachael Lighty. "So power was lost to about 5,000 customers in the Annapolis area." According to the Annapolis Police Department's Twitter feed, officers directed traffic at Main, Conduit  and Duke of Gloucester streets downtown until traffic lights became operational again. Traffic lights were also out on Forest and Bywater roads, Gemini Drive, Hilltop Lane and Spa Road, according to Annapolis police. All service was restored as of 12:40 p.m. Thursday, according to Lighty.

Greater Annapolis Emerges From Hurricane Irene

No major damages reported, but thousands in the area remain without power. Utility workers have already begun restoring power throughout the area.

Greater Annapolis emerged from the darkness Sunday morning in the wake of Hurricane Irene to the sound of chainsaws and humming generators. Areas of many neighborhoods are still without power Sunday afternoon, though most of the retail centers in the area have power—as well as long lines at most of the restaurants. Zu Coffee in the Bay Forest Shopping Plaza along Forest Drive were busy serving a line of customers stretching out the door, at least 25-people deep. The nearby Giant grocery store was doing brisk business, but wasn't too swamped. Across Forest Drive, the line for the McDonald's drive-through was backed up onto Forest Drive. Driving along the busy roadway was even more dangerous as several traffic signals were either dark or …
