If you visit St. Anne's School of Annapolis, you'll likely notice something you wouldn't expect to see—a puppy. A mixed Labrador and Golden Retriever puppy named Eaton is being raised to be a service dog by Donna and Emerson Davis. Since Donna is a teacher at St. Anne's, Eaton goes to school with her. The kids know they're not supposed to run up on Eaton and just start petting so they're learning restraint. Eaton also knows he can't do what most dogs would—play and lick. Eaton is on a leash but, even so, there's no jumping or any other behavior you might expect from a puppy. Eaton has been bred specifically for this role. Since I was a child I have loved World War II history. While the politics and battles still hold interest for me, I was always pulled to the culture surrounding the war. It was a time when heroes walked among us, but better than that it was a time when our country recognized and appreciated those heroes. Today, we are still surrounded by heroes, but I am not sure how often we recognize them and appreciate what they have sacrificed for us. On April 3 at Quiet Waters Park we have an opportunity to do both.
