Weather Service Warns of Snow Thursday Afternoon

The National Weather Service said as much as five inches of snow could come late in the day.

Get ready for some snow on Thursday. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter storm watch for Annapolis, Anne Arundel County and much of the Baltimore and Washington, DC, region and forecasts a possible five—or more—inches of snow. A winter storm watch means there is the potential for significant snowfall, as opposed to a warning, which indicates a storm is imminent. Precipitation will begin as a mix of snow and rain Thursday morning, changing to snow later in the morning and through the afternoon, according to the watch. "Snow may be heavy at times during the afternoon and evening," according to the storm watch, which means the evening commute might be affected. Winter Weather Advisory Issued for Annapolis, County

The National Weather Service predicts a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain.

It wasn't a white Christmas, but snow started falling around Annapolis on Wednesday. Anne Arundel County is under a winter weather advisory from the National Weather Service (NWS) until 1 p.m. "A winter weather advisory means that periods of snow, sleet or freezing rain will cause travel difficulties," according to the release. "Be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibilities." NWS stated that people should expect a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain. Forecasters predict that a mix of freezing rain and sleet will continue throughout the afternoon. The advisory extends to Northern Baltimore, Harford, Montgomery, Howard and Prince Georges counties. City Wants Help For 'Major Snow Events'

Annapolis is looking for private companies to assist with snow removal this winter.

Annapolis' Department of Public Works is looking for additional manpower and equipment to help city crews handle major snow events. “In 2010, Snowmaggedon shut down the city for days and was devastating to local merchants," Mayor Josh Cohen said in a press release. "Forecasters are predicting an above-normal snowfall again this year, so we are doing everything we can to be prepared.” Cohen has directed Public Works Director David Jarrell to compile a list of local companies to support city staff and "ensure that we are well positioned to mount a full-court press in the event of another major blizzard."  The Department of Public Works is looking for the following types of equipment: Type lll Snow Truck Type ll Snow Truck All companies that …
