More School Zones To Have Speed Cameras

The first speed cameras are up and running with more to come throughout Annapolis.

Drivers are reminded to watch their speeds in school zones during 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays now that the first speed cameras in Annapolis are in effect. Those caught driving 12 mph or more than the speed limit will be sent a $40 citation in the mail—with only warnings issued for the month of March. The city has one fixed and two mobile speed enforcement cameras inside vehicles so they can be positioned in different school zones. The areas are marked with signs indicating speed is photo-enforced in those areas. Patch previously reported the presence of speed cameras near Mills Parole and Germantown elementary schools. The following school zones were also chosen as locations—if they don't already have automated speed enforcement equipment…

A for-profit company manages these cameras. I want more policemen and none of these privatized scams that are nothing more then a regressive tax on the middle class. Privatizing government is the wholesale corruption of government and destruction of a Democracy. Our taxes are sky high because we have to pay for-profit prices for government services. These business owners buy and sell our …   more ›

City To Announce Speed Camera Locations Next Week

Eleven schools around Annapolis have been chosen as speed camera locations.

Drivers passing 11 schools in Annapolis will soon see signs alerting them to a "speed zone," which means police may have a speed camera watching them. "Even though there are 11 schools that we will announce to the public, there will only be three with cameras," Annapolis Police Chief Michael Pristoop said. Pristoop plans to announce the 11 locations once the Department of Public Works starts putting up the 64 "speed zone" signs—which he anticipates could be as early as Monday. The signs will indicate where the cameras will start and stop recording drivers. "The idea is that you will never get a speeding ticket if you open your eyes and read a sign," Pristoop said. He's assigned eight police officers to move and calibrate the cameras each …

That's the idea, Pristoop. But the reality is that the cameras malfunction and issue false tickets CONSTANTLY. What is the accuracy rate of the cameras? NO ONE CAN SAY. Isn't that suspicious? This is about MAKING MONEY, and nothing else.   more ›

Speed camera are not going to save anyone from being hit by a car they just take pictures of some one speeding. Forget these money making scams. The way to protect children is to put 4way stop signs at all intersections near school zones and speed humps on all roads that surround schools. If there are no intersections in school areas then put stop signs at the begining and end of all school zones…   more ›
