Will returning county champion Olivia Simmons of Bates Middle School take the prize as the top speller again in Anne Arundel County? She has competition from 31 other students who are prepared to show off their spelling skills at the 25th annual Anne Arundel County Spelling Bee on Feb. 23. Eighteen public school students, 13 private school students, and one home-schooled student will compete to become the county champion, according to a press release from Anne Arundel County Public Schools. The winner will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, DC, to compete in the 2013 Scripps National Spelling Bee from May 28-30. Anne Arundel County Public Schools’ best fifth- to eighth-grade spellers are set to compete Feb. 25 for a trip to the national championship in Washington, DC. The 24th annual county spelling bee is set to feature 28 students, including five returning school champions. The competition is scheduled for 10 a.m. in the Board Room at the Parham Building, according to a release from the school system.
