PHOTOS: County Libraries Celebrate Summer Reading with Baysox

Anne Arundel County Public Libraries recognized kids who participated in the summer reading program at Sunday’s Bowie Baysox game.

County kids who have participated in the Anne Arundel County Libraries Summer Reading Program enjoyed a night of baseball, fireworks and prizes Sunday as the Bowie Baysox recognized them for their summer reading successes. Many kids from area libraries flocked to Sunday night’s Baysox game where they took part in a pre-game parade on the field and were congratulated for reading over the summer. Representatives from Anne Arundel County Public Libraries also were on hand, giving out prizes and taking pictures of the kids participating in the event. “The kids are pretty jazzed they get to run out on the field before the game and get a prize,” said library spokeswoman Laurie Hayes. “We have been working with the Baysox for about 10 years now …

Bowie Baysox Host Summer Reading Night

Participants in the Anne Arundel County libraries Summer Reading Program will head to the Bowie Baysox game on Sunday.

Kids participating in the Anne Arundel County Public Library’s Summer Reading Program will head to the Bowie Baysox game on Sunday for a parade, giveaways, fireworks and Captain Underpants. The annual event gives kids who participate in the library’s program recognition for reading in the summer. Adding to this year’s festivities will be Captain Underpants himself. The first 1,000 kids aged 3 to 14 to arrive at Sunday’s game will receive a copy of the widely-popular children’s book, Captain Underpants. They will also get the chance to meet the character at the game. Every kid who has signed up for the Summer Reading Program can get a free ticket to the game. VIDEO: Summer Reading Program Kicks Off Activities

Kick-off events in Annapolis are scheduled for Wednesday and you can still sign up at any Anne Arundel County Public Library branch.

Activities for the 2012 Summer Reading Club sponsored by the Anne Arundel County Public Library system will kick off on Wednesday at libraries in Annapolis. Kids can still sign up at any branch in the county, where they can find suggested reading lists with award-winning books that have been identified as suitable and appropriate for all grade levels. Summer Reading Fun at Libraries in Annapolis

School is out and the county libraries are ready to help keep kids turning the pages this summer with fun activities and programs.

The textbooks may have closed for the summer but the reading continues for area youth as the county libraries welcome students to the 2012 Summer Reading Club. This year's theme is Dream Big – Read! for kids in grade 12 and younger. The annual summer reading program started decades ago, said Laurie Hayes, spokesperson for the Anne Arundel County Public Library system. The participation hovers at about 14,000 each year, she said. "We are excited and looking forward to hopefully breaking the 15,000 mark this year with kids signing up for program," Hayes said. Annapolis Neck Branch Library Kicks Off Summer Reading Program This Week

With the theme "One World —Many Stories," summer reading program offers special prizes, events and book lists for kids of all ages.

Though the school year is winding down, the county library is just gearing up for its free annual summer reading program for children of all ages. “Kids entering grade 12 and younger are invited to stop by their local library this summer and join the 2011 Summer Reading Club,” said Anne Arundel County Public Library (AACPL) spokesperson Laurie Hayes. “Students can sign up anytime, at any branch.” All branches have suggested reading lists, with award-winning books that have been identified as suitable and appropriate for all grade levels.
