Suspicious Package Turns Out To Be Retail Security Tag

Police shut down West Street from Route 2 south to Old Solomons Island Road for about an hour on Thursday after a report of a suspicious package.

The suspicious package that closed the 2000 block of West Street for about an hour on Thursday turned out to be a retail security tag. Firefighters responded to the BB&T Bank around noon after a pedestrian reported walking by a trash, hearing a beeping noise and spotting an object that had wires attached, said Battalion Chief John Menassa. "The device was the cause of the audible alarm," Menassa said. Police shut down West Street from Route 2 south to Old Solomons Island Road while the Annapolis Fire and Explosive Services Unit used one of its robot and one of the investigators in a bomb suit to approach the trash can.
