A Day in the Neighborhood

Starting the Morning at b.b.bistro

Each week Patch will explore a different spot in an Annapolis neighborhood. This week we start with West Annapolis.

One thing I love about Annapolis is its great, distinctive neighborhoods and business districts. From Maryland Avenue, to downtown to Eastport, each area has its own unique look and feel. On a recent Friday morning, I had an assignment in West Annapolis bright and early. This was the perfect excuse to introduce some friends and collegues who are visiting the area to breakfast at b.b.bistro. It was also the perfect excuse to have my breakfast drink of choice—a medium nonfat latte. This cozy spot which began with two friends who worked at Trader Joe's is a great place to start the day. It's also perfect for a mid-afternoon snack or to meet friends for lunch. (The veggie sandwich is one of my personal favorites.) What’s your favorite thing to…

Video: West Annapolis Elementary Kindergartners Thank Veterans with a Song

Watch our video from Friday's ceremony, where students sang a traditional song and one they wrote themselves.

Kindergartners at West Annapolis Elementary thanked veterans Friday by singing a heartfelt song they wrote themselves, with the help of music teacher Clair Stein. "We are grateful that you're keeping us safe. We are grateful that you're being so brave. We are grateful that you're serving our country," the students sang. They sang those lyrics during a schoolwide Veterans Day ceremony, which included parents, held Friday morning. “We are here to recognize all the men and women who have sacrificed for our country today and honor them,” Principal Christine Stockett told the students. Parents who serve or have served in the military went around and introduced themselves, and then had the chance to take pictures with their children afterward. …

Meet the Chef: b.b. Bistro’s Carla Lucente and Stacey Jackowski

Green restaurateurs Serve up healthful food in West Annapolis and at the Market House.

It started with two women working at Trader Joe’s. Carla Lucente started a catering business on the side, and her co-worker and friend Stacey Jackowski began helping her.  “We got along so well. We were very efficient together. And one day Carla said, ‘Do you want to open a restaurant together?’ The next day we started looking at real estate,” Jackowski said. “One month later, we signed a lease…unbeknownst to our husbands,” Lucente added. “We knew it was the right thing to do. One thing after another fell into place. We were searching for a coffee machine, and a gentleman walked in the door and said, ‘Do you guys need an espresso machine?’ We said, ‘Yes!’ and bought it for a quarter of what we would have spent.” Lucente envisioned local, …

Ginny Vroblesky: People And The Environment Go Together

People are part of the environment, not the cause of all its problems.

Ginny Vroblesky is an environmentalist and lifelong world traveler. She describes herself as a military child whose father was in the Air Force for World War II. She was born in North Carolina but the family started moving around when she was 6 weeks old. These days she travels to Europe, particularly to Scotland to visit friends. Her family settled in West Annapolis in 1962 in a house still owned by her parents where Vroblesky now lives in order to offer support for the now elderly parents. She is a graduate of Annapolis High School class of 1964 and holds a degree in sociology from the University of Maryland. She also loved zoology, she said. Vroblesky uses her love of writing to teach people that while there are factors that effect the …

Having Your Cake and Eating It Too

Make Time To Play

Heather Hinkle is not your typical 20-something Annapolis woman. As a single parent running her own business in West Annapolis, her idea of “play” has taken on a new meaning.

Having been in the pet grooming business for more than a decade, Heather Hinkle opened her own shop in September of 2009. Her favorite job, though? Being a mom to three-year-old daughter, Abigail. When I asked Hinkle to tell us a little more about being a single parent and a business owner her response was, “What else is there? That’s me: a single mom and pet grooming business owner.” Turns out, this is not true at all.  Q: What do you find to be the biggest challenge as a single parent? A: Not having the energy to do it all the time. It's hard after working at such a physically demanding job all day to go home and "play." Sometimes, I just want to sit on the couch and relax but there’s no time for that. There are books to be read, puzzles…

Having Your Cake and Eating It Too

Vacationing in West Annapolis

This winter, you don't have to travel far for that relaxing feeling you get from a day at the beach. Treat yourself with a deep tissue massage.

“Rubber bands.” Karen Forloines says, rubbing my back. “It feels like a bunch of rubber bands back here. We’ll stretch them out.” I explain to her that I am a writer, constantly hunched over my laptop. I don’t tell her I have horrible posture and have just been generally wound up for the past two months. She can tell. Forloines is a masseuse at Ridgely Retreat. Actually, she is the deep tissue specialist there, but I think of her as a miracle worker. I spent an hour with her this past Saturday afternoon and for those 60 minutes nothing in the world was wrong. According to its website, “Ridgely Retreat is a cozy haven affording peace, quiet, and serenity located in West Annapolis. One step into our world and you'll be enveloped in a …
