The new cafe will include four new restaurants.
Construction is coming to a close at the Westfield Annapolis Mall on a new addition to its dining lineup. The TV crew from Animal Planet's Tanked was packing up on Tuesday morning in front of the new dining area, where two aquariums built by the show's stars will serve as centerpieces. The new dining cafe will include four eateries, including YoLavie Yogurt, SMAK Cafe, Squisito's Pizza and Pasta and Dumpling Dojo. It will also have a play space for kids. A grand opening for the dining cafe is scheduled for 10 a.m., June 5. The cafe is part of an expansion at the mall that was completed in 2007. Two aquariums being built by the TV show's experts will be centerpieces for a remodeled section of the mall that will include a new dining cafe.
The stars of the Animal Planet TV show Tanked were filming at the Westfield Annapolis mall over the weekend as they constructed two giant fish tanks. One of the new aquariums built in the mall's new dining area near Banana Republic will feature a nautical theme with U.S. Navy memorabilia—including flags, a hand-crafted ship's mast and Caribbean fish. Tanked is in its fourth season and follows a team around the country as they work with high-profile clients, including celebrities and big-name companies, to install aquariums. Co-stars of the show are Brett Raymer and Wayde King, brothers-in-law from the Las Vegas-based company Acrylic Tank Manufacturing. Press Play lets gamers try out console titles before buying them.
Most arcades went the way of the dodo years ago with the rise in popularity of home consoles like XBox and PlayStation. But Cesar Diaz is taking a gamble with a fresh concept that he hopes will bring games back to the mall. Diaz is the owner of Press Play, a new store at the Annapolis Mall that allows video game players to try out a game on major consoles before having to pay the average $60 cost. He also hopes the store will encourage gamers to try playing together, in person, rather than isolated on the Internet. "I wanted to make it a modern-day arcade," Diaz said. A new store headed to the Westfield Annapolis mall in April will unite gamers for tournaments and allow them to test drive the latest games on shelves before buying them. Press Play will be located in the mall next to Under Armour. The space currently has a sign announcing their grand opening in April. The company's website describes Press Play as a lounge for gamers, where they can sit down with several game consoles to play by themselves or with friends on fully equipped HDTVs. Police are still searching for a suspect believed to be involved in a reported robbery at The Great Cookie at Westfield Annapolis mall during the weekend. Anne Arundel County police arrived at the mall about 8:22 p.m. Saturday for a reported robbery at the cookie store. Officers learned that a suspect approached the store's clerk and handed over a note demanding money, according to a police report. After receiving an unknown quantity of money, the suspect fled towards the parking garage. No one was injured in the incident, police said. Although Easter isn't until the last day of the month this year, it's already time for the giant bunny to start handing out treats. The Easter Bunny will be at The Children's Place at Westfield Annapolis mall from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday. If it's still too early for you to be thinking about Easter, mark your calendar for March 23 when the mall will host egg hunts from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The egg hunts will take place in Macy's Center Court for ages 2 to 7. An Irish dance company surprised shoppers near JCPenney on Saturday.
A group of Irish step dancers surprised patrons of the Westfield Annapolis Mall with a flash mob dance to Psy's "Gangnam Style" on Saturday. The Columbia-based Teelin Irish Dance Company overtook the space in front of JCPenney's with about 40 dancers who combined traditional Irish step moves with the Korean pop star's now famous horse-riding move. "Gangnam Style" has inspired dozens of spoof videos from across the globe, including one by the U.S. Naval Academy for its annual spirit video. On Friday, Psy's original music video became the first video on YouTube to exceed 1 billion views, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The Santa at the Annapolis Mall kept seeing children and let parents use their own cameras after a power outage knocked out his computer system.
UPDATE: (3:45 p.m.)—Jennifer and Sam Spruce were in line with their two children to see Santa at the Westfield Annapolis Mall when the power went out on Thursday night. "We were there late and were one of the last families in line. The mall staff notified us that the chance of us having our picture taken with Santa was very slim," Jennifer Spruce said in a post on Facebook. "We were still several families away and only had less than 10 minutes left when the mall went completely black." A high-voltage transmission line fell down near Bestgate Road in Annapolis taking several Baltimore Gas and Electric substations with it shortly before 9 p.m. The outage put more than 68,000 homes and businesses throughout Anne Arundel County in the dark.
