Photos: Is This Sculpture a Ship or a Fish?

Artist Bobby Donovan said his new art installation at Westgate Circle in Annapolis is meant to have a nautical reference that evokes images of the ribs of a ship or fish.

Artist Bobby Donovan said the wooden installation is meant to have a nautical reference that evokes images of the ribs of a ship or fish.

A new $10,000 sculpture erected at Westgate Circle Tuesday is comprised of five wooden arcs that its creator Bobby Donovan said he hopes inspires nautical images to those who pass by. "It could be the ribs of a ship or the ribs of a large fish," Donovan said. "I wanted a nautical theme without being very specific." Installation of the wooden "ribs," which are built from reclaimed oak, cedar and pine, closed the inner lane of traffic at the roundabout from about 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. A crew of volunteers helped Donovan secure the ribs to a wooden platform, which is buried beneath the earth. The sculpture will not be finished until its steel masts are attached sometime this week. Donovan said additional road closures would not be needed in …
