VIDEO: Flash Mob Goes 'Gangnam Style' at Annapolis Mall

An Irish dance company surprised shoppers near JCPenney on Saturday.

A group of Irish step dancers surprised patrons of the Westfield Annapolis Mall with a flash mob dance to Psy's "Gangnam Style" on Saturday. The Columbia-based Teelin Irish Dance Company overtook the space in front of JCPenney's with about 40 dancers who combined traditional Irish step moves with the Korean pop star's now famous horse-riding move. "Gangnam Style" has inspired dozens of spoof videos from across the globe, including one by the U.S. Naval Academy for its annual spirit video. On Friday, Psy's original music video became the first video on YouTube to exceed 1 billion views, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The latest version of Apple's superphone hits the shelves Friday morning.

If you're one of those people that just needs the iPhone 5 as soon as it's available, local stores will be making accommodations for you for the Sept. 21 release. Large crowds are predicted at the Westfield Annapolis mall Apple store, said mall spokeswoman Barbara Feldes.  The mall will open its doors at 8 a.m. Friday. People who want to make sure they get the phone first can line up beforehand by the first-floor entrance in the red garage next to J.C. Penney. But don't try to line up Thursday night. "We do not allow people to camp overnight on the walkways or anything," Feldes said. "People have to stay inside their cars." Feldes said representatives from Apple will be outside handling the line at 5 a.m. until the mall officially opens at…

Opening of New Forever 21 at Annapolis Mall Delayed

The banner outside may still say spring 2012, but Forever 21's grand opening is pushed back until the middle of summer.

I was at Wesfield Annapolis mall the other day scoping out what it has to offer in the way of shopping, and I noticed the construction of what appears to be a huge Forever 21 store. The banner said, "Opening Spring 2012." I peeked inside at construction, and it looked like things were running way behind schedule. I couldn't see how the store would be finished before June 20, the official start date of summer. Besides, I think most people consider it summer already. So, I emailed Christi Wallace, the director of marketing for Westfield Annapolis. "We are probably looking at more of a July opening at this point," Wallace said in an email response. "I don’t have a firm date to share with you, but I will be in touch as soon as I hear something…

Patch Asks: What's On Your iPod?

Students around Annapolis reveal their favorite songs.

Ever wonder what's playing in the ears of plugged-in teens and tweens? Patch stopped by a table of teens studying for their physics test at Barnes and Noble in the Annapolis Harbour Center and then talked to a few more students at Westfield Annapolis mall. What's Hot? Local teens' listening favorites covered a wide range of music — classic and alternative rock, R&B, rap, techno and even country. Some older teens even listened to some "classics." What's Not? A few said "no country" while others said "no rap." While Justin Beiber got the nod from one young teen, he received thumbs down from others. And, despite her current spot in Billboard’s Top 100, not one teen mentioned a Britney Spears' song. Scroll through the photos to read how the …

After Assault at Mall, Parents Should Review Strategies for Staying Safe

Police, self-defense experts offer safety tips for children and teenagers.

Telling children not to talk to strangers isn’t always enough to keep them from danger, according to police and self defense experts. After a teen girl was sexually assaulted at the mall earlier this month, police say children should practice safety scenarios, learn to make a scene if something is wrong and to review rules and emergency plans with parents. “It’s so understandable how that could have happened,” Joe Van Deuren, owner of Balanced Life Skills, a third-degree black belt and instructor of self defense and martial arts, said of the incident at the mall. “We teach kids to trust adults and not to make a scene ... We need to teach them how to say ‘no’ loudly and with assertiveness.” Status of the Mall Case The reported assault at …

Thanks for the reminders and new info to keep our kids safe. There must be a balance between trusting and being smart. I will be sharing this article with my kids. We all have a false sense of security from cell phones which don't always work in all areas of the mall and batteries do lose charge. Problem-solving skills need to be practiced and honed.   more ›
