Democratic Rep. John Sarbanes earned 67 percent of the vote.
Incumbent Rep. John Sarbanes soundly defeated his two challengers in the race for Maryland's 3rd District on Tuesday. "I am proud to serve the people of Maryland's 3rd Congressional District, and I thank them for choosing me as their representative in Congress," Sarbanes said. "I will work hard to put the public interest ahead of special interests." The Towson Democrat grabbed 67 percent of the vote while his Republican challenger Eric Knowles earned 29 percent and Libertarian Paul Drgos received 3 percent as of 11:50 p.m. on Tuesday. Knowles, who lives in Annapolis, failed to win his home county of Anne Arundel by more than 12,000 votes. Drgos said he was pleased with his modest showing. President Obama defeated Republican Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential election.
President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden were re-elected Tuesday night, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his vice-presidential running mate Rep. Paul Ryan. NBC News called the presidential election for Obama around 11:15 EST. The president sent a message on Twitter at 10:14 saying simply, "This happened because of you. Thank you." The Obama campaign won the most expensive presidential race ever, with both parties raising about $2.6 billion. The race was filled with negative campaigning on both sides, from President Obama attacking Romney’s business experience with Bain Capital to Romney lambasting Obama’s handling of the economy. Incumbent Rep. Donna Edwards won 75 percent of the vote against Republican Faith Loudon.
Democratic incumbent Rep. Donna Edwards won a resounding victory in Maryland's 4th District against Republican challenger Faith Loudon on Tuesday night. Edwards garnered 75 percent of the vote while Loudon earned 22 percent as of 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday. "I'm feeling really good," Edwards said. "I spent the better part of the day driving through Prince George's and Anne Arundel. I saw a lot of enthusiasm and good, long healthy lines." The Pasadena Republican did take Anne Arundel County, but the majority of the 4th District lies in Prince George's County where Edwards won approximately 19 out of every 20 votes cast. The results of early voting in Anne Arundel County were announced Tuesday evening. More than 37,000 people took part in early voting prior to Election Day in the county. Democrats including President Barack Obama and Sen. Ben Cardin performed well, but voters also came out strong against an expanded gambling measure. UPDATED (2:26 a.m.)—Same-sex marriage is the law in Maryland. The passage of the controversial law was the biggest win among a list of six other statewide ballot questions including the DREAM Act, expanded gambling and congressional redistricting that all also passed. Gov. Martin O'Malley took to the podium to address the Question 6 victory party at The Soundstage in Baltimore early Wednesday to chants of his last name. Barack Obama won Maryland’s 10 electoral votes on Tuesday, defeating Republican Mitt Romney. In the 2008 presidential election, the state voted for the Democratic candidate, and since the 1990s has voted for the overall winner of the presidential race three out of five times. Romney and Obama did not campaign aggressively in Maryland. The state has typically been a Democratic stronghold in recent presidential elections. History suggests that if President Obama wins Maryland's electoral votes, he'll be getting most of his support from elsewhere in the state.
Barack Obama secured Maryland’s 10 electoral votes on the way to winning the presidency in 2008, but his strongest support in the state was found outside Anne Arundel County. Voters in the county actually supported Republican candidate Sen. John McCain by a narrow margin, with 129,682 votes for McCain and about 125,015 for Obama. A review of the results shows that Obama garnered his strongest support in most of West Anne Arundel County and the Annapolis area, while McCain won the areas of Pasadena, Severna Park and south county. Obama earned very strong support in precincts in Brooklyn Park, Severn and Glen Burnie, but voting was generally split in other parts of north county. By the time early voting ended on Friday evening, 38,140 voters had cast ballots in Anne Arundel County.
More voters turned out at early voting centers Friday than on any other day in Anne Arundel County's early voting history. Check back here throughout Tuesday for live election results. By the time early voting ended on Friday evening, a total of 38,140 voters had cast ballots, according to information with the Maryland State Board of Elections. That's an increase of more than 4,000 over 2010's total early voting results, though 2012's numbers only account for 10.9 percent of the total number of registered voters in the county. Statewide, about 11.6 percent of voters cast ballots early, with Anne Arundel voters somewhere in the middle of the turnout, and Talbot County leading the state with 23 percent of total voter turnout during early …
