Annapolis Supported Same-Sex Marriage, DREAM Act

Annapolis supported the president and the DREAM Act even though both lost in Anne Arundel County.

Annapolis voters broke with Anne Arundel County to support President Barack Obama and the DREAM Act, according to complete but unofficial results from the Anne Arundel County Board of Elections. Annapolitans also supported same-sex marriage and keeping the Congressional district lines as drawn in greater percentages than the county. Question 4 (DREAM Act)—Annapolis voted to keep the DREAM Act, which provides in-state tuition at state colleges for certain undocumented immigrants, 58 to 42 percent. It contrast, Anne Arundel County rejected the idea with 51 percent of people voting against Question 4. The measure also passed in Maryland 58 to 42 percent. The law enjoyed its greatest support in Annapolis from voters at the Eastport Community …

Marriage Board, Photo Cause Stir at Polling Place

A photo of the first couple on a board about a marriage seminar appeared to some Annapolis voters as subtle electioneering against same-sex marriage.

Election judges at an Annapolis polling place removed a photo that appeared to imply that President Barack Obama advocated against same-sex marriage on Tuesday. The picture, which appeared to be of the president and first lady Michelle Obama on their wedding day, was stapled to a bulletin board about "the art of marriage" that gets "to the heart of God's design." Maryland voters will decide Question 6 on Tuesday—a yes vote would keep a law passed in February legalizing same-sex marriages. Obama endorsed Maryland's law in October—five months after he came out in support of gay marriage generally, according to The Huffington Post. The bulletin board does not mention same-sex marriage or the referendum. It advertises those who have …

Election Draws Steady Crowds in Annapolis

Lines often stretched outside of polling locations as voters huddled together in the chilly November air.

A steady stream of voters flowed through polling places around Annapolis with wait times averaging around 45 minutes on Tuesday. "Usually we get a good crowd at the beginning of the day, and then it slows down and picks back up at the usual times like lunch time and when people get off work," said Bob Bruce, an election judge at the Annapolis Area Library. "[This year] it seems steadier through the day." He and Joe Nasatka, an election judge at the Eastport Community Center, agreed that while most people came prepared for the six-page ballot, it was still taking longer than usual to get through. "Oh, it's incredibly longer because we've got so many questions to answer at the end," Nasatka said. "We could have used two more voting machines…

Bongino Accuses Sobhani of Campaign Ethics Violation

The Republican candidate for Maryland's Senate says the Independent made unattributed robocalls disparaging him.

UPDATE: (5:22 p.m.)—The Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in Maryland is accusing the Independent of violating federal election law by sending out robocalls on Sunday night that didn't include a campaign disclaimer. The call, which was uploaded to Youtube by a staffer for Republican Dan Bongino, states that Rob Sobhani supports making English the country's official language. Bongino said this claim was false. Also, the caller claims Sobhani is the real conservative alternative to incumbent Democract Sen. Ben Cardin, another claim that Bongino disputes. "That's not only unethical, that's a clear criminal offense," Bongino said. "Unfortunately, you have the right to be dishonest in politics, but you don't have the right to be dishonest …

How to Vote Early if Hurricane Sandy Takes Out the Power

Anne Arundel County's Board of Elections is preparing for a possible power loss at early voting locations throughout the county.

As Hurricane Sandy makes its way toward Maryland, Anne Arundel County's Board of Elections is preparing for a potential power loss at one or all of its early voting locations. "We are preparing today to have portable generators ready to deploy to power a few machines," said Director Joe Torre. "We are lucky; we have five locations in Anne Arundel County, so we can tell them to go to one of the other sites." He said he's hopeful that one or more sites will survive the storm without losing power. The storm, dubbed a "Frankenstorm", slammed Cuba on Thursday, and by Friday morning the death toll was listed at 21 across the Caribbean, according to The Huffington Post. BGE issued a statement on Wednesday for Maryland customers, saying it was …

Obama-Romney Final Presidential Debate: Who Won?

The third presidential debate between President Obama and Mitt Romney focused on foreign policy. Who dominated? We want to know what Maryland thinks.

After President Obama and former Gov. Mitt Romney sparred aggressively last week, the candidates dug into foreign policy at Monday night's third and final presidential debate. News organizations cited instant polls that showed voters believed both candidates did well in a face-off that was less contentious than past debates this season but offered up a few verbal highlights. The two candidates had extensive exchanges on Iran and Syria, and the importance of the U.S.-Israel alliance. Obama responded to a charge by Romney that the Navy had fewer ships than it did in 1916. “We also have fewer horses and bayonets,” said Obama. Whom do you think won the debate? Tell us in comments. -- TV Channels Broadcasting Live: ABC, NBC, FOX, CBS, CNN, …
