Annapolis SmokeHouse Opens for Business

The new barbecue restaurant can be found inside the shopping center at Bay Ridge Plaza.

A new high-end barbecue restaurant called Annapolis SmokeHouse has opened its doors in the Hillsmere shopping center. "This has been a dream of ours for a long time," co-owner Jennifer Krohn said. She and partner Steven Gaines returned to Annapolis from California in June 2011 with the intent of opening a restaurant. The couple signed a lease on the space at 107 Hillsmere Dr. in February. "I knew if we were going to open a restaurant it would be in Annapolis where we have a network of family and friends," Jennifer Krohn said. "My uncle is actually the pit master. He's been smoking meat in his backyard for many, many years." Jennifer Krohn's uncle, Robert Krohn, wanted to open a more traditional barbecue joint but she and Gaines wanted a …

Moe's Fights Against Downtown Chipotle Location

Lawyers for both sides sparred at the Board of Appeals meeting in Annapolis on Tuesday.

Downtown Annapolis' burrito war heated up on Tuesday night as attorneys for Chipotle and Moe's Southwest Grill argued over whether the former should be allowed to open a location at 36 Market Space. "I state the obvious when I tell you that this is simply a competitor that doesn’t want to see a competitive business come to town," Chipotle attorney Alan Hyatt said. "I think we are entitled to the special exception, and this is a pretty flimsy opposition." Chipotle is asking the Board of Appeals for permission to take over the location's current special exception, owned by Hard Bean Coffee and Booksellers, to be a standard restaurant that serves alcohol. The national burrito chain wants the board to approve two major modifications to that …

I do think that the Historic District of Annapolis is unique. Unlike other commentors I do not think that Chipotle , Starbucks, Subway , Jimmy Johns etc.... should be allowed in this area. One commentor worried about having "bars and T-Shirt shops". I will always enjoy the unique locally owned bars and T-Shirt shops over the fast food chains, If I want McDonalds or Burger King or Starbucks I can …   more ›

British Pub Opens on City Dock

The Crown & Anchor quietly opened its doors for business on City Dock in Annapolis last week.

A new British style pub called The Crown & Anchor has opened its doors for business down on City Dock. The restaurant is owned by a British couple Jon and Lesley Marsden who split their time between Essex, England and Annapolis. "Our children have grown up now, so we have a bit more time on our hands," Marsden said. "We just want to do things that we want to do now." And what they wanted was to open a restaurant in Ananpolis. "We came over in January and looked at various sites and this is the one that we finished on," Marsden said. "I think it’s a great site; it’s got a lot of potential." She described the menu as British pub food with a Chesapeake influence. Patrons can find traditional pub items mixed in with oysters and crab cakes. The…

Downtown Muffin Shop to Open Next Month

My Favorite Muffin's owner said she hopes to open the doors at her Main Street location in Annapolis by Labor Day.

A national restaurant franchise that specializes in muffins plans to open in downtown Annapolis next month. "We hope to be up and running the week of Labor Day," said owner Missy Maglin. My Favorite Muffin is under construction at 138 Main St. where Yofiore Yogurt Shop was located. The sign out front hasn't changed yet, but construction crews have been working for weeks to transform the interior. The store—which I used to frequent when I in Nevada—will sell muffins, bagels, coffee, smoothies and sandwiches. Maglin said the store also will have a wireless Internet connection for its customers. Right now, My Favorite Muffin needs to hire bakers, sandwich makers, cashiers and an assistant manager. People who are interested in applying can …
