Matt,
If you live in Piney Orchard you could take the "M" route shuttle, no parking required. -

ReplyTim,
With all the hundreds of acres of landfill that are planned in his district, have you contacted Mr. Benoit to get his opinion? I don't recall him ever taking a position on these landfills - specifically whether he would consider legislation that would allow the public to have a say in this process 20 years after these special exceptions were granted.

ReplyWhy is AA County government capitulating the the idea that thousands of acres of landfill (between Chesapeake Terrace and Cunningham ) are inevitable? This area of West County neighboring Fort Meade has been dubbed "the Gold Coast" for its development potential.
What is the point of having time limits on special exceptions to zoning law, if there is no ability to reconsider the new conditions?
20 years ago, there was no Piney Orchard, no BRAC, no Cyber Command. Why wouldn't these new conditions be taken into account?

ReplyIf Gov. O'Malley is so concerned with encouraging job growth at Fort Meade, why hasn't he funded the desperately needed road improvements on MD 175 and MD 32?

Chris,
I agree that people need to take responsibility for safe driving. However, it's also the government's responsibility to ensure that roadways are safe to use.If this were a less populated area, a patch of ice would rarely result in a fatal accident. In this area, the traffic density is such that any mistake is likely to evolve into a multiple-vehicle accident.
Thus, the government fails on two counts: one for failing to adequately salt the roads, and the second for failing to adequately expand the capacity of the road network in this area to handle the traffic volume.

ReplyI'm with Jeff - why couldn't the AA County Attorney's office answer this question?
Lawyering in Maryland is a good gig I guess...

ReplyI came upon an accident on the Amtrak overpass on MD 175 just north of the West County Library intersection. I think it happened around 7:20 am - it was probably the accident to which that police officer was responding.
I agree with the above posters about the lack of salt and the failure to postpone school openings. The overnight sleet and snow must have cooled roadways below freezing, so that even rising temperatures (it was 33 degrees at 8am at BWI) did not melt the black ice ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_ice ) that had formed.

I think you are correct CM - with Federal spending cutbacks likely in the future, I think the idea that Odenton will be revitalized with BRAC is gone. Meanwhile, the AA county council and executive are busy ignoring the immanent approval of new landfills immediately bordering Odenton. I'm sure that will be a real selling point for the new out-of-town Fort Meade employees, along with the existing Millersville landfill.
However - at least we have preserved "rural" South County from development! Way to go AA County government!
