and it's at least 20 minutes to the Odenton MARC from Crofton - its a 4 mi difference. So what's your point? I think folks in Crofton already realize that they don't live right near public transportation. Creating weekend service at a station that is 4 miles closer than a station with existing service is going to make a difference?

ReplyYes, Diana because THAT scenario is so common. Unbelievable. Maybe if someone has the money to stay overnight in DC, they could keep enough scratch to spring for a cab from BWI rail to get their car at the Odenton MARC lot. Love these First World problems, welcome to the Nanny State..

ReplyNo, Diana Castillo, I was talking only about Odenton. People in Bowie are 8 miles (10-12 min) from the New Carrollton Amtrak/Metro which is also closer to Crofton than BWI (and only 4 miles further than Odenton). My, my, Diana, it is a wonder how people been able to survive all these years without weekend MARC service.

Actually Chris. things have changed since you moved out. Door to door travel time on transit from a home near GORC Park in Piney Orchard to Union Station is 53 min, Bus picks up on SLW at 6:20 am, arrives at station at 6:35, MARC train 409 scheduled for 6:41 at Odenton and arriving Union Station at 7:08 am. The schedules for both the M bus and MARC are also now built into the directions feature on maps.google.com.

Bryant, oh. I just thought it was a perpetual regressive tax increase on working people who needed to put gas in their car to go to work and buy groceries for their family.

So Bryant, everyone in the State of Maryland should pay high gas taxes because federal officials at Ft Meade won't walk the Administration's talk on improving transit options and discouraging employees from driving alone to work?

Chris, you're actually wrong. The good people of Maryland have been paying their 23.5 cents/gallon tax to the state, and their 18.5 cents/gallon tax to the feds -- which for a typical two car family is already over $500/year -- as well as their tolls and high MVA fees. But here in Maryland, Governor O'Malley and his Democrat colleagues in 2011 cut transportation projects so that 23% of the revenues designated for the Transportation Trust Fund could go to the state's General Fund to be used for other purposes. Since 2001, over $1 billion was diverted from Transportation in this way. The new bill does not provide adequate protection against these raids continuing to be done again.
And within the Transportation Trust Fund, funds can be used to fund transit and other transportation projects, not just highway maintenance. Last year, the MD DOT took in about $2 billion in gas taxes, and motor vehicle taxes and fees, but the State Highway Administration spent only $1.36 billion. So I would argue that drivers were paying more than their fair share for highway spending. These new gas taxes go over and above what's need to expand and maintain state highways, and the gas taxes keep rising in the future without action needed by the General Assembly. As a result, Maryland will have one of the highest gas taxes in the country.

I think they knew this wasn't ever going to happen. There is so much excess lodging capacity at BWI and Arundel Mills already. All these guys are interested in is putting in high-density residential and the mixed use requirements are just a game for them that they try to get out of them any way they can.
The OTC and AA P&Z needs to start requiring the retail/commercial to be built before the new residential units, or limit projects to residential above ground floor commercial structures. If they can't fill the space, they need to make some more initial concessions to get it off the ground, just like happens everywhere else around the country. Successful mixed use takes effort, sound strategy, and experience. And it's obvious these guys just want the quick money of residential building.
Committee members need to remember the second "O" is for oversight and should look to lessons learned from communities that have successfully mastered mixed use development.
