ANNAPOLIS, MD - A mother delivered her baby in an Annapolis parking garage thanks to a doctor who just happened to be passing by.
Mother Elsa Antunez planned to deliver her child last Wednesday at Luminis Health Anne Arundel Medical Center, WJLA reported. Antunez's contractions picked up and delivery started in the hospital's parking garage, however.
Dr. Janelle Cooper, an OB/GYN physician at the hospital, was walking into work when she heard a scream from a vehicle. Cooper jumped in to assist with the delivery.
Jean Andres, director of Labor and Delivery, joined seconds later while also reporting for her shift.
“Talk about an unexpected delivery!” the hospital said on Facebook. “They both happened to be in the right place at the right time. We're happy to share mom Elsa Antunez and baby Yesenia Patricia are all just fine.”
The delivery team later reunited with the newborn and her mother to take a group photo, which is posted here.
Antunez, 23, thanked Cooper for her care.
“I’m very grateful you were there because I wouldn’t have known what would happen if you weren’t there,” Antunez told Cooper, according to WJLA.
Cooper said she was happy to help.
“Just doing what I was trained to do and so glad to be in the right place at the right time!” Cooper said on Facebook.
